由於嚴重的金融危機,數萬名希臘人由於無法承擔高賦稅而被迫放棄私家車。根據該國交通部的統計,僅在今年12月,就有7萬名機動車車主注銷了自己的汽車,這一數額比去年同期增加了15%。造成這一現象的主要原因是,許多人已經無法承擔機動車稅收的經濟負擔。根據工會組織的估算,為了執行嚴格的節約政策,希臘人收入水準從2009年以來已經下滑了三成。此外,交通部還表示,截至到本周五,已經按規定繳納機動車稅的車主僅有六成。
