美國認為駐利比亞使館遭襲擊是恐怖攻擊事件。白宮發言人卡尼(Jay Carney)周四表示,日前在班加西發生的美國使館遭暴力襲擊事件「不言自明」是一起「恐怖襲擊」。但卡尼沒有進一步解釋美方是否認為該襲擊事件是預謀犯案。美國國務卿希拉蕊‧克林頓則在同日表示已經成立「責任審查委員會」調查駐班加西美國使館人員遭殺害事件。上周二(9月11日),位於利比亞第二大城市班加西的美國使館在夜間遭到攻擊,美國大使施蒂文斯(Chris Stevens)以及另外三名外交人員在襲擊中喪生。
