馬桶上的人權
11月19日是「世界馬桶日」。在柏林火車站,活動人士舉行示威活動,提醒人們關注這一世界性議題。儘管對於發達地區來說,抽水馬桶司空見慣,但地球上仍然有三分之一的人口沒有條件使用衞生安全的馬桶。這種生活狀況會導致一些疾病——全世界因為衞生條件差而死亡的人數甚至超過了因瘧疾和麻疹致死的人數總和。
為健康投資
凡是可以通過水傳播的疾病,比如傷寒和痢疾,都特別容易在缺乏衞生設施的地方迅速滋生擴散。肯亞内羅畢的基貝拉區是非洲最大的貧民窟之一,就存在這樣的問題。過去人們常常把大便排洩在塑膠袋裡,完事兒之後一扔了事。不過自從設立了這種公共廁所之後,患上述傳染病的人就少多了。
最髒的工作
在印度很多地區由於沒有抽水淨化系統,仍然有掏糞工這樣的工種,比如圖上這位婦女就是一員。其實20年前政府就出台法規禁止這項工種,但是到目前為止還沒有任何僱主因此而遭到起訴。今年年初起,首都新德里正式廢除了「人工清掃廁所」工作。
危機地區也需要尊嚴
在危機地區,衞生淨化設施所需的物流費用相當支高。人們為了上趟廁所,常常需要排上幾個鐘頭的隊。圖上這些逃到突尼斯避難的索馬利亞人就面臨這樣的問題。他們需要額外的衞生設施,但當地往往支付不起建設的費用。
小兒麻痺症盛行
敘利亞周邊地區遍佈著難民營,比如圖上這座位於庫爾德斯坦自治區的難民營。每天都有成千上萬的敘利亞人為了逃避戰火來到這裡。難民營人滿為患,導致小兒麻痺症等傳染病通過不潔淨的水源廣泛傳播。
可持續性解決方案
在玻利維亞首都拉巴斯附近的埃爾阿爾托(El Alto),人們研製了一種馬桶,它可以對排洩物進行分揀和加工,並將其作為肥料循環利用。該地區的農民可以免費得到這些肥料,而且一座新建的足球場草地也是使用這些肥料進行養護。
不是「辦大事」的好地方
在歐盟,有2000萬居民沒有條件使用抽水馬桶。在東歐的農村地區,簡陋的茅坑式旱廁所仍然相當普遍。這種如廁方式會使得地下飲用水遭到污染。這些地區衞生條件的落後也制約了經濟發展。
有的放矢的幫助
建一個簡單的廁所,就是性價比最高的扶貧手段之一。55歲的衣索比亞妇女阿亞格(Tirame Ayago)在廁所雙生行動(Toilet Twinning)組織的幫助下,已經用上了自己的廁所。過去,她的家人常常因為衞生條件惡劣而生病,現在她可以把買藥的錢省下來給孩子支付學費了。
會當凌絕頂
在世界上最偏遠的地區,廁所也常常是沒有水電和淨化設備的。比如在阿拉斯加的麥金利山上的這個廁所裡,人們就可以一邊「方便」,一邊欣賞這座北美最高峰頂的美景。這個愜意的角落贏得了「廁所愛好者」巴克萊(Luke Barclay)的青睞,他把這裡收錄到自己《觀景廁所》(Loo With a View)一書中。
