Matka Teresa z Kalkuty, urodzona w Skopje zostanie prawdopodobnie jeszcze w b.r. ogłoszona świętą, niecałe 20 lat po śmierci w 1997 roku.
Albańska katoliczka
Matka Teresa urodziła się 26 sierpnia 1919 roku w rodzinie albańskiej w Skopje, wówczas pod panowaniem tureckim jako Anjez Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Tradycyjny strój narodowy, jak na zdjęciu zamieniła w wieku 18 lat na habit irlandzkiego zgromadzenia sióstr loretanek.
Życie dla biednych i pokrzywdzonych
Już wkrótce Matka Teresa została wysłana jako nauczycielka do szkoły prowadzonej przez siostry loretanki w Kalkucie w Indiach. Pracowała tam przez 17 lat, zostając na końcu dyrektorką szkoły. W 1946 roku zakończyła karierę, bo poczuła powołanie do niesienia pomocy chorym, najbiedniejszym i porzuconym dzieciom w slumasach Kalkuty.
Misjonarka miłości
W 1946 r. założyła zgroadzenie Misjonarek Miłości i zaczęła się troszczyć o najuboższych, opuszczonych i najbardziej potrzebujących.Szczególną uwagę i serce poświęciła ludziom chorym na trąd oraz niepełnosprawnym, zdeformowanym dzieciom.
Wyróżniona i krytykowana
W 1979 r. Matka Teresa otrzymała za swoją działalność humanitarną Pokojową Nagrodę Nobla. Jednocześnie była też krytykowana - oskarżano ją o to, że chrzciła umierających wbrew woli. Była przeciwniczką aborcji i antykoncepcji. Wiele wątpliwości budziły także standardy opieki medycznej w jej placówkach.
Indyjska katoliczka
W 1947 r. tuż po zdobyciu przez Indie niepodległości Matka Teresa przyjęła indyjskie obywatelstwo. Już wtedy mówiła płynnie w języku bengali. Zmarła 5 września 1997 r. w domu macierzystym swego zgromadzenia w Kalkucie. Budynek w tle to budynek królowej Wiktorii.
Orędowniczka papieża
Wobec szerokiego zasięgu dzieła Matki Teresy oraz powszechnego przekonania o jej świętości, Jan Paweł II zezwolił na rozpoczęcie procesu beatyfikacyjnego już w dwa lata po jej śmierci. A 19 października 2003 osobiście ogłosił ją błogosławioną na Placu św. Piotra w Rzymie.
Nieustanna cześć
Wielu katolików, a szczególnie siostry Zgromadzenia Misjonarek Miłości oddają niezmiennie cześć Matce Teresie z Kalkuty. Według danych Watykanu Zgromadzenie zrzesza obecnie 5300 członkiń w 130 krajach świata. Utrzymuje ono 762 domy opieki dla chorych na trąd, hospicja dla umierających, schroniska dla bezdomnych i dzieci. W Zgromadzeniu Braci Misjonarzy Miłości działa około 400 członków.
