World in Progress: Japan's hidden asylum seekers

Unwanted immigrants in Japan who have been denied asylum end up in prolonged detention — often for years. Some are so desperate that they resort to hunger strikes. There also have been cases of suicide. Sometimes, detainees are temporarily released — but they never know when they'll be detained again. Kathrin Erdmann spoke to several detainees and was granted access to a detention center.
