World Cup Day 3 in Pictures
The third day of a rip-roaring World Cup in Brazil brought thrills, bad tempered tackles, and more shock results.
Colombia celebrate opening win
The Cafeteros must have been confident ahead of this World Cup. At least they seem to have practised group goal-celebrations. The dance routine Colombia performed after the first goal in their 3-0 win over Greece drew particular praise.
Deflected first goal
It wasn't a hard shot that broke the ice, but the deflected ball just squirmed past Greece keeper Orestis Karnezis to put Colombia up 1-0.
Free kick extends Colombia's lead
Teofilo Gutierrez will thank the Greek defense for leaving him all on his lonesome. He poked home with his left foot to double Colombia's advantage.
Three's the charm for the Cafeteros
James Rodriguez completed the scoreline with a goal in the final seconds. The 3-0 win gets Colombia off to a near-perfect start, while Greece already look like candidates for an early exit.
Costa Rica shock Uruguay 3-1
Joel Campbell was man of the match in Los Ticos' historic win, scoring his side's first goal and providing the assist for the third. You could call him the mother of the victory.
Strong performance by Costa Rica's keeper
Costa Rica would probably have had no chance had their goalkeeper Keilor Navas not pulled off a near impossible save just before halftime. The underdogs went into the dressing room only one goal down and were able to regroup.
Italy see off tenacious England
England were valiant losers in the second group D game on Saturday, with Mario Balotelli scoring the winner early in the second half.
Stand-out players
Antonio Candreva, who provided the assist for Balotelli's winner, was a persistent threat throughout the night, while the pace of England's young guns - including goal-scorer Daniel Sturridge - unlocked the Italian defense early on.
Misfiring star
The pressure on Wayne Rooney keeps piling up - once again the England star failed to register his first World Cup goal, despite two sharp chances. But his assist for Sturridge's equalizer was brilliant.
Ivory Coast turn it round
Ivory Coast took all three points off Japan in Group C with two goals in the space of three minutes in the second half. Both goals came after crosses from the right found strikers unmarked in the box.
Veteran makes the difference
Ivory Coast got both their goals within five minutes of the introduction of the 36-year-old Didier Drogba. The aging hero rolled back the years and galvanized his flagging side with a brilliantly powerful display.
