Wastepickers forced out of jobs for soccer showcase

Cowie, SamJuly 26, 2012

In Brazil almost 3,000 landfill sites are set to close before the country hosts the soccer World Cup in 2014. In June, Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Jardim Gramacho, one of the world’s largest rubbish dumps was shut down. The closure has drastically affected the livelihoods of around 1,700 wastepickers. The workers who collected recyclable goods at the dump are now without work.
