Its cornerstone was laid in the 13th century. Since then it has been continually altered, extended and expanded. This has resulted in a conglomeration of buildings, wings, courtyards and gardens, in various designs and styles. Nowadays museums and collections of international standing await visitors, among them the Imperial Treasury, the Sisi Museum and the Albertina. The imperial apartments are also on show.

The Vienna Hofburg has also been the official residence and workplace of the Austrian President since 1945.
