Unusual moments in sports in 2015
Horses without riders, a racecar skidding along upside down, wrestling girls in dresses and a boxer hanging in the ropes. There was no shortage of comical, unusual and even spectacular moments in sports in 2015.
Roller coaster ride
Brazilian André Negrao was treated to a new perspective during a Formula Renault 3.5 Series race on the Le Mans track. Going into a left turn, the wheels of Negrao's car made contact with those of a competitor. His car flipped, briefly scraping along the asphalt upside-down before righting itself. Negrao escaped uninjured, but his race was over as his car's rear axle broke in the mishap.
Foam in the face
Foam in the face, a pile of vegetables on his head and completely exhausted - that is how a man feels when he wins and iron-man race in Hawaii. Jan Frodeno looked like a doused plant, but is nonetheless very happy. He was the fifth German to win the most prestigious triathlon in the world, crossing the finish line with a time of eight hours and 14 minutes.
Batman and Robin
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (left) and Marco Reus (right) celebrated Borussia Dortmund's opening goal in February's derby against Schalke like true superheroes. Batman and Robin helped Dortmund win 3-0, but some vital questions remain: Where is Superman? And are the Flash and the Hulk also under contract?
When jockeys are without their horses...
...things can go wrong. This was the case at the podium for the German Derby, where winner Kent Farrington (right) and second-place finisher Philipp Weishaupt used their champagne in an unusual way. No harm was done. After a 100,000-euro payday you may celebrate any way you wish.
When a horse is without its rider...
...the spectators are treated to an unusual sight. The stallion Caleri 2 was the star of the Equestrian European Championships in Aachen, doing a lap after having left his rider, Zuzana Zelinkova of the Czech Republic, behind after a jump. The horse made his way back to the stall - as did Zelinkova - on foot.
Taking the goat by the horns
After scoring in Cologne's 4-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in March, Anthony Ujah celebrated by grabbing the horns of Hennes VIII, the billy goat, which as Cologne's mascot, is always present on the sidelines at the Rhineland club's home games. A few days later, having seen the error of his ways, Ujah visited Hennes at his home - a stall at Cologne's zoo, where his apology was accepted.
Grappling in dresses
Martha "La Altena" and Anglea "La Simpatica" take no prisoners in the ring. Billed as "las cholitas luchadoras" (the fighting cholitas), they are wrestling stars in Bolivia. They routinely fill arenas and even appear in television ads for a line of sausages.
Sleep well, sweet prince!
Sometimes you just need a moment for yourself, a timeout to gather your thoughts. Robert Tlatlik is no exception. The German super lightweight boxer was seeing starts after Said Rahimi connected with a punch to the head after the referee had interrupted their November bout. Tlatlik came back to win on a technical knockout.
Can't be bothered...
Formula One driver Fernando Alonso decided to take it easy after his car failed during the first qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix in November. He said that it if happened again he would make sure he brought some sunscreen and something to read with him.
Only flying is better
... is what these ski-cross racers must be thinking during this event at Arosa in Switzerland - if they even have time to think as they jump from the ramps and navigate the narrow turns on the course. Ski cross can be a contact sport and features plenty of spills. Maybe the jumps are the only chance they get to catch their breath.
