The European Union has followed the Khordokovsky case closely and has been very vocal about the lack of fair procedures at his trials. There has also been criticism over the way the court has often ignored witnesses for the defence. Today's guilty verdict will only increase the scepticism over Russia's legal system - and strengthen international support for Khordokovsky.
