Tomas Klemann

August 31, 2012

Whether it’s the latest Bundesliga match or tennis show-down, Tomas Klemann is sure to keep tabs on the score as sports anchor for the English language Journal. He joined the news team in November 2011.

Tomas’ life reads like a global story. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to a German father and a Taiwanese mother, he travelled the world from an early age. By the time he turned 25, he had lived in nine different countries including Germany -- an educational experience that greatly influenced his world views and exposed him to various languages. As a result, Tomas speaks English, German, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.

Tomas graduated in 2001 with a degree in Marketing and Communications. His career later took him to Spain, England, Chile and China where he held various positions ranging from PR executive to business consultant. Keen on reconnecting with his Asian heritage, he ended up moving to Taiwan to further his knowledge of Mandarin Chinese. There, Tomas was bitten by the media bug and began working for a radio station before crossing over to producing and hosting travel features for various Latin American television broadcasters.

As chance would have it, an encounter with an old friend brought him to Berlin and eventually to DW.

With travel in his blood, Tomas enjoys exploring the world, although one of his favorite places is his native home, Argentina, where he likes to spend his free time with family and friends over a good asado and a nice glass of Malbec. Naturally, he loves to eat and cook and is known to make some mean Chinese dumplings. As for sports, Tomas supports FC Barcelona and enjoys wakeboarding whenever the fickle Berlin weather allows it. This has the additional advantage of keeping his ever-expanding stomach girth in check.
