Three-Year-Old Hands Dad Over to Police

DW staff (jam)April 14, 2006

Is honesty always the best policy? One little girl who was told by her parents never to tell lies followed their lessons, even turning her father over to police officers when he was hiding from them.

Little Hannah must have been confused when she stood with her mother at the door of the family home, facing police officers. Her mom told the police that her husband, 33-year-old Dieter Brauer, wasn't home, but Hannah knew that wasn't the case. Daddy was hiding in a closet. So she did what her parents had always told her to do, she told the truth.

"But papa is here," she told the cops, leading them to her dad's hiding place.

Just previously, Brauer had been driving on a road near home in the town of Vreden, in northern Germany. When he saw police were conducting driver's license checks, he turned tail and ran at high speed. Police were able to get his license plate number and went to his house, where little Hannah ratted on him.

Now Brauer faces charges for speeding and driving with an expired license. But he says he can't be angry with her.

"She was just doing what we've always told her and that's not to tell lies," he said.
