What value does the forest have? It is absolutely vital - both for humanity and nature. It's impossible to put a price tag on its value. But trees store CO2 - which is certainly measurable in terms of the climate.

Every year, some thirteen million hectares of forest are destroyed - that's the surface area of one soccer pitch per second. For years, there was no economic incentive to protect the world's forests. But that is set to change: under the UN program REDD+ or Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation, wealthy industrial nations pay for forests to be replanted in developing countries or for measures to prevent deforestation in the first place.
