The Saar River bend

Over millions of years, the Saar River has cut its way through the rocks, creating a U-shaped river bend that is now the most famous sight in the Saarland region.

The bend in the Saar River, called "Saarschleife" in German, is the ultimate motive for any holiday photos. Near the town of Mettlach, the river does a 300-degree U-turn. The best view of this natural wonder can be found at the "Cloef" lookout point, close to the village of Orscholz. Athletic visitors climb the steep, narrow cliff path to reach it. It is a challenging tour. But those seeking a more tranquil approach can enjoy a leisurely tour of the 7-kilometer river bend on board a pleasure boat. On foot or by boat, this is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience close to nature.
