The role of women in the Kurdish movement

January’s assassination of three female Kurdish activists in Paris underlines the powerful role women play both on the political and military sides of the Kurdish struggle. One of the women killed was a founder of the PKK rebel group fighting the Turkish state for greater minority rights. For the Kurdish movement it's as much a struggle for gender rights as it’s a struggle for minority rights.
