The Pope arrives in Israel on the second leg of his Mideast tour

Karlotta BahnsenMay 11, 2009

Pope Benedict says anti-Semitism is "totally unacceptable." Speaking just after arriving in Israel on the second leg of his tour of the Middle East, the Pope also called for establishment of an independent Palestinian state. The trip is throwing a spotlight on the Catholic Church's relations with Jews following controversy over Bishop Richard Williamson, who denied the Holocaust. The pope's appeal for a two-state solution to the Palestinian conflict could yet lead to tensions with Israel's rightwing new government.
