Welcome back. The banking sector in Germany has not been subject to the kind of changes and mergers seen in Britain and the US in recent decades. A large number of smaller banks have managed to survive as independent companies -- run either privately, by co-operatives, or by the federal states. But the merger between Commerzbank and Dresdner Bank may be the first step in a major consolidation in the German banking sector.
