Swiss Cheese Makers Feel the EU Regulation Squeeze

Switzerland has worked hard to set up free trade agreements with the Eurozone. This may be good for some products, but not for cheese, say farmers in Swiss Appenzell.

The European Union prides itself on its open markets - and its free trade between member states. Non-EU member Switzerland has been anxious to get in on the deal, and has collaborated with Brussels so it too can benefit from free trade. But for cheese makers in Appenzell, free trade brings EU regulations in tow. And they may change the product for good.
