Schwerin Palace stands on an island in the middle of Lake Schwerin, and it's the city's main landmark. Its architecture reflects many centuries. The dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg once reigned here. Nowadays it's the seat of the state legislature of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Schwerin Palace is surrounded by picturesque lakes and parks. Twelve lakes lie within the city limits – a paradise for water sport fans. In the past few years dragon boat racing has established itself. Every year crews from all over the world come to Schwerin's international dragon boat races.
