Schweinsteiger wants more from career

July 16, 2015

The news has started to sink in for Bayern Munich fans. Bastian Schweinsteiger is no longer their player. It hasn't taken the midfielder long to settle in at his new club though, and he has joined with clear goals.

Bastian Schweinsteiger was all smiles in his first Manchester United press conference, and spoke clearly about his goals at his new club.

"I am very happy to be here and to play for Manchester United. It is a big honor. I want to win titles, it is easy. Manchester United is used to it and I am used to it too. That is the goal for the next years in Manchester," said the soon to be 31-year-old. The midfielder added that although he was looking forward to working with Head Coach Louis van Gaal again, it was the lure of the club that made him choose the Red Devils.

"Of course we know each other, we had a good time but I am here for Manchester United because Manchester United is a big club and I am looking forward to playing in that great stadium," Schweinsteiger said.

Club with huge support

He will have to wait a while before appearing in the Theatre of Dreams as United is currently on a tour of the USA. He could make his unofficial debut in the club's opening International Champions Cup match on Friday, when they face Mexico's Club America at CenturyLink Field, home of the Seattle Sounders MLS team.

That said, Schweinsteiger might have to wait even longer to make his Manchester debut after his new head coach's comments. "I have to say to the players, you have to fight for your position," van Gaal said. "Morgan Schneiderlin has to fight with Schweinsteiger, Michael Carrick, Daley Blind. These are the players who can play in the centre of midfield."

Schweinsteiger though, is expected to start and is keen to make a good impression on the club's fans, who left a lasting impression on him the last time they met. "The supporters from Manchester United, they are huge. I remember once when we played there, we lost 3-2 but we moved on to the next round - but these supporters were very respectful after the match, they gave us applause and I am looking forward to playing in front of these supporters."
