Save the Tiger! Indonesia Fights for its Rain Forest

June 5, 2012

Illegal deforestation, wildfires and hunting once took their toll on Sumatra's rainforest, all but destroying it. But today the island's Harapan Rainforest is a shining example of how the rainforest ecosystem can be saved and restored - it's an internationally unique project.

Indonesia has one of the largest areas of rainforest in the world, covering ninety million hectares. But two thirds of that area are classified as "production forest". The result is that Indonesia is the world's third largest emitter of CO2 after the United States and China. Now the Harapan Rainforest team is seeking as far as possible to return the forest to its original condition before the deforestation began. They are reforesting an area of 100,000 hectares, planting seedlings and taking measures to protect the diverse native wildlife.
