Romania/Serbia: Conflict over the Vlach minority

The Vlachs are a Romanian-speaking minority in Serbia. They’re not well known abroad, but at the European Union summit in Brussels, they became a bone of contention.

The Romanians want to block negotiations on Serbia's accession to the European Union. They say Belgrade must first guarantee minority rights for the Vlach minority. As a result, the 30,000 Vlachs in Serbia have now found themselves at the center of a political controversy. Some Vlachs hope this new attention will support their efforts to preserve their traditional culture.
