Robin Hood in the Hambach forest

Environmental activists want to prevent the destruction of Germany’s unique Hambach Forest. But right next to it is the RWE coalmine, where 40 million tons of lignite is mined annually.

Local mines owned by RWE produce around 40 million tons of brown coal each year. The company wants to expand the mines deep into Hambach forest. Environmental activists are holding their ground to halt those plans. They dig tunnel traps, chain themselves to trees, and sabotage diggers. They want to protect the forest and also question Germany's reliance on CO2-intensive brown coal for power generation.
