Germany's Andreas Toba sustained a knee-ligament injury that would rule him out of the rest of the Rio Games. However, he fought through the pain during qualifying to ensure that his team would make it to the final.

A bullet tore through the media center at the Olympic equestrian venue but organizers reassured members of the media, describing this as an "unfortunate incident."
False alarm
A bomb squad was called in to detonate an unattended backpack near the end of the cycling course. It turned out to contain nothing but articles of clothing.
