Fifty years ago, construction began on the Berlin Wall. To the West, the Wall was a symbol of oppression and totalitarianism. In communist Eastern Germany, it was known as the 'Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart'. When the Wall fell, thousands of pieces of cement became symbols of freedom around the world.
