This year's ceremony was hosted by Nicki Minaj on Sunday evening (9.11.2014) in the SSE Hydro arena, Glasglow Scotland's newest event center.

US vocalist Ariana Grande took the Best Female Artist distinction, adding to that the prize for Best Song, "Problem." The honor for Best Male went to Canadian teeny heartthrob Justin Bieber.

Katy Perry, who led the field with seven nominations this year, took home two awards including Best Look, an all-female nominee category, and Best Video with "Dark Horse."

Perry was eclipsed in awards by One Direction who took home three statues, Biggest Fans, Best Live Act and Best Pop Act.

Created to honor the music and artists most popular with fans, the MTV European Music Awards are voted on by the public in the top 16 categories with the exception of "Best Video."

Absent from the ceremony were winners Justin Bieber, One Direction and Katie Perry, who is currently touring in Australia.

Also missing was Best Electronic Act Calvin Harris, but Ed Sheeran, U2 and Enrique Inglesias performed for the event. Alicia Keyes sang "We Are Here" which had been nominated for Best Song with a Message.

That award, presented in partnership with the "Someone Like Me" campaign, was taken by superstar Beyonce Knowles in a close race with newcomer Meghan Trainor. Knowles' "Pretty Hurts" beat out Trainor's "All About That Bass." That song of self-empowerment spent nine weeks in the number one position on the US Billboard's top 100 before being replaced last week by Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off."

Beating out One Direction and Germany's own Revolverheld for Best Worldwide Act was Bibi Zhou from China.

Revolverheld, however, was recognized as Best German Act. The band, founded in Hamburg in 2002, released its first single and the debut album "Revolverheld" in 2005. A number of chart successes were to follow, including the official anthem to the European Football Championships,"Helden 2008."

Presenting this year's Global Icon Award to Ozzy Osbourne, often called "The Prince of Darkness," was Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. Osbourne began his career in the '60's heavy metal band Black Sabbath before going off on his own. He became a household name once more in the early 2000s with MTV’s hit television show "The Osbournes."
