Germany has more than 19,000 foundations, 9,000 of these have been set up in the past ten years alone by people dedicating their wealth to a variety of causes ranging from culture to social or environmental issues. Dr. Wilhelm Krull, chairman of the board of the association of German foundations and head of the Volkswagen foundation talks about the role foundations play in society.
