The Handel House Museum in London - which is located in the former living quarters of the German-born composer George Frideric Handel - is preparing a special exhibition to mark the 40th anniversary of the death of Jimi Hendrix on September 18, 1970.

Although separated by more than two centuries, the baroque composer and the rock guitarist were flatmates. Hendrix rented an apartment in the Mayfair building in the late 1960s, and it was here that Handel wrote his famous "Messiah."

The curators point out that both musicians were known for being great improvisers - and a number of concerts will be held to explore connections between Handel's compositions and unplugged versions of Hendrix songs.

The exhibition will also focus on Hendrix as a rock lyricist and there will be a number of workshops around lyric writing.

Hendrix's old flat normally houses the administration offices for the Handel House museum but will be made accessible to the public as part of the exhibition, which runs from August 25 until November 7.
