Senator John Kerry accused President George Bush of a colossal error in ordering the invasion of Iraq in their first television debate. The world is better off without Saddam Hussein, the president shot back, in a 90-minute encounter in which rigid rules were meant to stifle spontaneity. For example people in the audience were ordered not to hiss, nor boo, cheer or cry.
