Lebanon: The extent of the destruction in Beirut
The Israeli military continues to attack targets in Lebanon, including in the very center of the capital Beirut. According to the Lebanese government, about 2,000 people have been killed so far.
Fire and destruction
The Israeli military is carrying out massive airstrikes on targets in Lebanon, as seen here on October 3. The army says it is targeting the positions of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia. Israeli ground troops have also been deployed in southern Lebanon since October 1.
The morning after
This photo was taken on Thursday morning in one of the southern districts of Beirut. Israeli airstrikes also hit other targets in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, about 60 kilometers east of Beirut.
Strikes at the center of Beirut
An Israeli airstrike also hit a building in the residential area of Bashoura, in the center of Beirut. According to Israeli sources, it houses an office of the Islamic Health Organization, which is linked to Hezbollah. The building is also close to the prime minister's office and the Lebanese parliament.
Waking up to destruction

Refuge in a club venue
Some people who lost their homes found shelter in the famous Skybar. The club is a flagship of the nightlife of the metropolis of Beirut. People have been helping each other by organizing first aid, food, and accommodation.
Sleeping rough
Martyrs' Square, just one kilometer from the port in the heart of downtown Beirut, has become a place of refuge for families. Many lost everything they couldn't take with them and don't know what to do next.
Temporary clean-up efforts
It will likely take some time before the destroyed houses can be rebuilt. There is no end to the conflict in sight. For now, the streets are being cleared of rubble using small excavators.
