Taita-Taveta is known for producing food for other neighboring counties in southern Kenya. Banana farming has become a business that ensures the livelihood of several families in the region and increases the flow of trade on the border with Tanzania.

Taita-Taveta has a semi-arid climate. Yet, it is a very fertile area. It supplies seven counties with food. Banana farming is a special highlight. Banana is part of the food culture there. Historically it is produced on small-scale. The government has been providing support since the 1980s. Banana farming has gained prominence in the local economy. Women farmers participate in this success. Bananas are a common staple to the communities in Kenya and Tanzania. The trend is intensifying cross-border trade in bananas.
