Inside Europe: Breaking away from Spain?

This week, lawmakers in Spain's northeast region of Catalonia approved a declaration of independence from Spain. They passed a motion in their regional parliament declaring the start of an 18-month process of breaking away from the central government in Madrid. They plan to create their own new, independent country in Europe by 2017. But the Spanish government vows to block it at all costs.
