In Depth: No one initially realised the impact of the vulcanos explosion would be felt much beyond its immediate vicinity

Marcus SchlenchApril 19, 2010

It all started in the early hours of Wednesday. A volcano in Iceland which had been inactive for two centuries - errupted - spewing lava and ash. Scientists had been monitoring the seismic activity there - and knew an explosion was imminent. Some 800 people had been evacuated from that sparsely populated region. The erruption led to flooding as the volcano is located under a glacier. No one initially realised the impact of the explosion would be felt much beyond its immediate vicinity. And even worse, there is concern more erruptions could follow in Iceland which has numerous volcanoes.
