In depth: Before the election in Spain - deep divisions within Spanish society - je 07.03.2008 10

Milan TillichMarch 7, 2008

Over the last 30 years, since the end of the Franco dictatorship, Spain has developed radically, becoming one of Europe's most progressive countries. But the country's modernization has also led to deep divisions within Spanish society, which is still quite conservative in some parts, and strongly Roman Catholic. The Socialists under Zapetero hold more liberal views when it comes to issues such as same sex marriage, abortion and stem cell research. These have been hot election campaign topics. And in bitter televised debates, the conservatives have taken opportunity to criticse this ruling government's social changes and liberal policies. Our next report points out, how Spaniards attitudes, both modern and conservative, are making this election still too close to call.
