The run up to the war on Iraq marked a turning point for relations between Europe and the United States. The two sides have in the last months made reconciliatory gestures towards one another, but problems ranging from trade to foreign policy are undoubtedly still there. But now that democratic Massachusetts senator John Kerry has emerged as the clear challenger to Republican George W. Bush in the November presidential elections, many Europeans are getting their hopes up for an administration change. Shaye Hoobanoff spoke to Dr. Josef Braml, a political analyst and US expert at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs in Berlin.
