Creating meaning despite censorship in China
Censorship for artists in China has gotten scricter in the past few years under Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The authorities keep close tabs on exhibits, sometimes ordering works of art to be removed. Even music online can have a way of disappearing if it has “the wrong message.” Yet musicians, painters and other artists are finding ways to get their message out, even if it means going underground. Quite literally sometimes.

Zimbabwe’s graffiti artists highlight social issues
In Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, for example, artists have been using their work to keep the public debate going on social issues made worse by the Covid-19 pandemic. Especially issues that affect women and girls.
