US carmaker General Motors has scrapped previous plans to move its European headquarters to Ruesselsheim in southwestern Germany.

The Opel headquarters in Rüsselheim will no longer be the new center of General Motors European operations.

Opel spokesperson Andreas Kroemer told the automotive magazine Automobilwoche that the previous plan to move the center from Zurich to Rüsselheim has been disbanded. However, all central decision making for Opel and Vauxhall will still be directed from Rüsselheim.

Opel top admin will move from Zurich

In the middle of November, GM had announced plans to move its European headquarters to Rüsselheim, which is located in southwest Germany and is the heart of Opel's operations with about 15,600 employees.

Now, only Opel chief Nick Reilly is set relocate there with his team from Zurich. More job cuts are also expected in Ruesselheim. About 2,500 workers, most of them in the administrative sector, are set to lose their jobs.
