GM does a U-turn... and says it will not sell its European susidiary Opel

AMRITA: US carmaker General Motors has cancelled plans to sell its European subsidiary Opel. GM says it has taken the step because of improving business conditions. The German government - who had lobbied hard for the sale to Canadian car parts supplier Magna - says it regrets the decision. +++ PETER: Others are welcoming GM's new strategy in the hope it will prevent plant closures. The carmaker's fortunes have improved markedly since it emerged from bankruptcy four months ago, making it easier to keep the struggling European unit.
