Ralph Giordano, the German writer and journalist, has been awarded the 2003 Leo Baeck Prize by the Central Council of Jews in Germany. The organization awarded Giordano the €10,000 prize for his writings on the contemporary threat of right-wing extremism and his work in keeping the Holocaust in the public consciousness, according to a statement released by the Central Council on Wednesday. The award is named after the rabbi Leo Baeck, a concentration camp survivor who was a leading member of Germany’s Jewish community during the first half of the 20th century.
