Following the completion of an eight-week test programme, GERMAN TV began broadcasting a regular 24-hour full programme in the USA on April 8, 2002. On May 1, GERMAN TV then became a subscriber-only programme.

The director-generals of the participating German public broadcasting institutions – ARD, ZDF and DW – officially launched the joint programme on March 1 in Berlin.

The highlights

"Watch what Germany is watching today" – this is GERMAN TV's motto - and these are some of the highlights: The news programmes Tagesschau and heute journal as well as Journal from DW-TV, talk shows like Sabine Christiansen, Berlin Mitte, Beckmann and Johannes B. Kerner Show. Furthermore, there are political magazines, such as Panorama, Monitor, Fakt, Report and Frontal 21, a wide variety of documentaries and on the weekends a regular re-cap of the latest games in the German soccer league, the Bundesliga. There is also an extra "pay-per-view" full-length transmission of an entire match.

Marketing efforts for the new Pay-TV programme from Germany have been operating in high gear ever since. DW's marketing partner in the United States is the GermanyCentral Agency. Both DW and GCA have set up call centers to handle GERMAN TV inquiries. At this writing, more than 800 households have subscribed.
