German Chancellor Angela Merkel is taking part in ceremonies in France marking the end of World War I. It's the first time a German leader has attended Armistice Day events in Paris. Merkel joined French president Nicolas Sarkozy and other dignitaries for a wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Some 17 million people died in the war -- most of them French, German and British soldiers.
