German Chancellor Angela Merkel has defended her response to the global financial crisis in a speech to party delegates at the annual convention of her Christian Demorats in Stuttgart. Her address also gave an idea of the campaign themes the CDU would be giving priority to in the run-up to elections in September of next year. Merkel has faced criticism from within her own party for maintaining a consistently tough line against any new spending and any new tax cuts to stimulate the economy.
