The main city in the region is Würzburg. Overlooking the city is the Marienberg fortress, which served as a home to the prince-bishops for nearly five centuries. Wine was cultivated here as early as the 13th century. In the 18th century, the prince-bishops moved to the Baroque Würzburg Residence which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site with wine cellars that are open to the public.

Many local vintners like to present their traditional wines in contemporary settings, such as the Hirn Estate in Untereisenheim, which is decorated in the style of Hundertwasser. Visitors can expect a hospitable welcome in the scenic villages that line the Main River, where in harvest season the winegrowers open their homes and offer their own wines for visitors to sample.
