Testimonies of a city with a colorful past...the Alexander Nevski memorial church, next to the former headquarters of the Communist party. But the city's patron saint, St. Sofia, is looking towards a dynamic future. The square in front of the venerable national theater is always a lively place. The old city palace has been turned into an art gallery. The palace grounds are now an exhibition space with a café. Art fans now meet where czars resided 150 years ago. The Romans ruled Sofia for five hundred years. Much evidence of their presence remain to this day. The Ottomans also spent half a century here. Sofia has seen more rulers than most cities in the world. The archeolgical museum displays artefacts from 8,000 years.
