The case of a veteran agent from Germany's Foreign Intelligence Agency (BND) arrested on suspicion of betraying secrets to a female Bulgarian spy was more problematic than previously thought, according to an unconfirmed report in the Berliner Zeitung on Friday. The paper said German authorities fear the 64-year old agent not only passed on confidential information to the Bulgarian contact, but also details that could compromise the security of other German secret agents working abroad. Authorities involved with the case have so far refused to comment on the Berliner Zeitung report. The agent, who was a Balkans specialist in the BND, was arrested at his home near Munich on October 9. He's thought to have passed information to the spy between late 1999 and last month. Justice sources said his motives were unknown. They didn't believe he was having an affair with the Bulgarian agent.
