Ending European Solidarity? - The SPD's dilemma

Germany's Social Democrats are in a predicament. On the one hand, they want the eurozone rescue to make progress and Germany's EU policies to succeed. That's why, even as an opposition party, they have voted together with the government on key issues time and again.

On the other hand, the SPD has noticed that this stance isn't doing it any good in opinion polls. Members of the party's grassroots have long been pushing for the SPD to play a more oppositional role.
