Germany's second-oldest nuclear power plant, in Stade, Lower Saxony, will be turned off on November 14, sources in the Lower Saxony government said on Tuesday. The E.ON energy company would not confirm the date, but said the plant would stop operating in mid-November. The Stade plant will be the first to be turned off since the German government and the nuclear industry agreed to scrap the country’s nuclear power plants by 2021. The facility is meant to be dismantled over a period of ten to 12 years starting in 2005. A temporary waste depot is supposed to be built in its place. The plant went into operation in January 1972.
