In Sunday's other vote - further north in the state of Lower Saxony - things went much more according to plan for Chancellor Merkel's Christian Democrats. There, the governing conservative-liberal coalition will remain in office, following a comfortable victory for CDU state premier, Christian Wulff. And there was a surprisingly poor showing for the Social Democrats - who suffered their worst result ever in a Lower Saxony state election.
