The results are in. Voting has now closed in our list of DW Sports' top five World Cup moments. Our Twitter users and readers from around the world have spoken.

Some may not be to your taste, and some of the most obvious moments - Maradona's Hand of God and Roberto Baggio's missed penalty, for instance - were omitted.

However, these are your votes and completely subjective. It could be a personal moment, a unique occasion for your country or just a vivid memory of past tournaments. We start our top five list with a unique World Cup moment from an irregular guest at the tournament.

Archie Gemmill, 1978 World Cup

The winning moment, by a narrow margin, was an outstanding goal by Archie Gemmill for Scotland against the Netherlands at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. The goal is renowned among the Tartan Army, and even more so, considering Scotland's failure to reach the World Cup since 1998 in France.

Gemmill, who was playing his club football at Nottingham Forest at the time, slalomed past three Dutch players, controlling the ball beautifully, before scoring Scotland's third goal of the game that they would go on to win 3-2.

Zinedine Zidane, 2006 World Cup

In second place was Zinedine Zidane's final contribution to football before his retirement. He would have hoped for a better exit, reacting to provocation from Italian defender Marco Materazzi and headbutting him on the chest in the 2006 World Cup final.

Even though he was retiring from football, FIFA slapped a three-match suspension on Zidane. He instead agreed to complete three days of community service at one of FIFA's humanitarian projects.

Zidane's dazzling talents shone at the 1998 World Cup, yet his last moment was marred with controversy for one of France's greatest ever players.

Harry Kewell, 2006 World Cup

Third on our top five list involves one of the world's smaller footballing nations, Australia. It's the goal by Harry Kewell that sent Australia into the knockout stages of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the first time the Socceroos have gone past the group stage.

Australia's "Golden boy" had his breakthrough period at Leeds United, before going on to play for Galatasaray, among others. Kewell's goal leveled the score against Croatia, enough to extend their stay at the World Cup, eight years ago.

Landon Donovan celebrates his goal in 2010.

Landon Donovan, 2010 World Cup

The US team's biggest footballing name, Landon Donovan might not have made the final squad for Brazil this time round, but the 32-year-old's goal against Algeria still managed to come fourth in our top five World Cup moments.

Back at the 2010 World Cup, the LA Galaxy star struck inside the first minute of stoppage time to secure a win over the North Africans. Some rank Donovan's strike against Algeria as one of the greatest moments in the history of US soccer.

Ilhan Mansiz, 2002 World Cup

Rounding off our list is the golden goal by Ilhan Mansiz at the 2002 World Cup, which sent Turkey to the semi-finals of the competition. Did you know: the former Besiktas striker is now a prominent Turkish figure-skater?

Turkey ended up coming third in the 2002 tournament, beating co-hosts South Korea 3-2 in the Third place Play-off in Daegu.

Other memorable moments that were noted by our readers, but that didn't make it into the top five, include Michael Owen's wondergoal against Argentina in 1998 and German international Oliver Neuville's 2006 World Cup goal.
