Daimler moves to cut costs by shifting production away from its home assembly plant

Constanze TressDecember 2, 2009

Management at Daimler plans to shift production of its Mercedes C-Class model to Bremen and the United States in an effort to hold costs down. It says it wants to assemble part of its C-Class cars in the US to minimize its exposure to currency fluctuations. Mercedes sold 250- thousand vehicles in the US last year - roughly 1- quarter of its global sales. Unions opposed to the US move, fearing it would lead to hefty job losses.
